Welcome to the Somerville Community House Inc.
.... at the heart of the community
We are a not-for-profit Community House that provides programs and services to the community in a friendly and welcoming environment, run by local volunteers and staff. Each term we have new and exciting programs on offer, so make sure you check OUR PROGRAMS for updates.
Our mission is to provide a place where people come together to meet others and share and gain skills. A place where you can come to know and belong to your Community. Our vision is simple - unlock your potential.
We value: confidentiality, empowerment, responsibility, accessibility and ethical business principles in a welcoming and caring environment.
History of the Somerville Community House
The State Government in 2000 invited applications from Neighbourhood Houses to apply for Department of Human Services Funding. Somerville Community House applied for funding and was successful. The Mornington Peninsula Shire also backs the Somerville Community House with funding, as it does all Community Houses on the Peninsula. This funding is ongoing each year, and enables us to continue to expand our services and offer a wide range of activities and support services to the local communities.
The refurbished Annie Sage Community Centre includes three community meeting spaces and a kitchen. The new centre houses the Shire's maternal and child health team in two Child and Family Health consulting rooms, providing services to about 40 families weekly as well as holding first time parent groups
The formation of the Somerville Community House Inc. is a great achievement - and we pride ourselves on offering a range of activities and courses to people of all ages in the community.
Heartfelt Thanks to our Volunteers
The Somerville Community House held an afternoon tea recently to say "Thank You" to all our wonderful volunteers. The Committee of Management Chairman Dick Cox expressed "that without volunteers Australia would grind to a halt!"
Community House Manager Kim Fitcher thanked over 30 people who contribute their time to give value to the program and extensive range of activities. "Your contributions make Somerville Community House the warm and friendly place we have come to know. Thank you!"
A PLACEMAKING GRANT to develop our outdoor space
Somerville Community House has just been selected to receive a $5,000.00 cash injection towards the cost of landscaping our garden – with grateful thanks to the Mornington Peninsula Shire. This grant will support Stage 2 of a 4 Stage process – with Stage 1 (Conceptual Landscape Design) now completed.
The new funding will enable Stage 2 to proceed.
Stage 2 includes - to construct pathways and ramp accesses, level some areas, build retaining walls, erect fencing and protect existing vegetation.
Future stages will depend on further funding and include:
Stage 3 – Creation of planter boxes, seating arrangements and adequate shading. Plant trees, shrubs, herbs, indigenous plants and espaliered heritage apple trees.
Stage 4 – Memorial Art Creations remembering indigenous custodians and members of the community.
Our vision is to beautify and enhance the outdoor space surrounding the Anne Sage Community Centre, home of the Somerville Community House and Maternal and Child Health services. The new space will provide opportunities for outdoor activities such as Tai Chi and Meditation, learning experiences and educational workshops – and will strive to enhance the social interaction and wellbeing of our Somerville residents.
Once the work starts you will find regular updates here – including photos and status reports on how we are progressing.
